You must complete all recommended steps—such as counseling, substance education, or treatment—before returning for a follow-up evaluation.
Once your SAP determines that you’ve successfully met the requirements, they’ll authorize you for a DOT Return-to-Duty test. This test must be completed under direct observation and passed in order to resume any safety-sensitive duties. The SAP also creates a follow-up testing plan that includes unannounced screenings, usually at least six in the first year, and may continue for up to five years to ensure ongoing compliance and workplace safety.
